San Lorenzo Unified School District

The San Lorenzo Unified School District was founded in 1859. Approximately 12,000 students from San Lorenzo andMore neighboring areas of unincorporated Alameda County attend its nine elementary schools (Bay, Colonial Acres, Corvallis, Dayton, Del Rey, Grant, Hesperian, Hillside and Lorenzo Manor) three middle schools (Edendale, Bohannonand Washington Manor) and four high schoools (San Lorenzo, Arroyo, East Bay Arts and Royal Sunset). The district also operates the San Lorenzo Adult School for returning students 18 and older.  </p> <p>For the 2010-11 school year, the district will offer preschool at seven of its nine elementary school sites. (For more information on the preschool program, <a href="http://slzusd.ca.schoolloop.com/file/1218758558436/5570503639758183354.doc">click here</a>.)</p> <p>The student body is 49 percent Latino, 14 percent African American, 13 percent white, 11 percent Asian and 7 percent Filipino. Approximately 31 percent are considered English language learners and 46 percent receive free or reduced meals. (A newly-renovated Central Kitchen, home of Child Nutrition Services, debuted in July 2010.)</p> <p>The average teacher-to-pupil ratio is 21:1, the average teacher salary is $66,945, slightly more than the state average. The district spends $5,832 per pupil — just slightly more than the statewide average for unified school districts, and just under the average for all districts in California.</p> <p>San Lorenzo Unified School District's mission is to "work together with parents and the community to develop critical and creative thinkers who are knowledgeable, responsible, caring participants who contribute to a changing world."</p> <p>The district is run by a five-member School Board. Dr. Dennis Byas is superintendent.</p>

San Lorenzo High School

San Lorenzo High School is one of four high schools in the More href="http://sanlorenzo.patch.com/admin/listings/san-lorenzo-unified-school-district">San Lorenzo Unified School District</a>, serving nearly 1,500 students in grades 9 through 12.  It received an  Academic Performance Index ranking of 666 for the 2009-10 school year.</p> <p>The student body is 52 percent Latino, 21 percent African American, 8 percent white, 7 percent Asian and 7 percent Filipino. About 18 percent are considered English-language learners.</p> <p>Additionally, 43 percent of students recieve free or reduced meals.</p> <p>Since the 2008-09 school year, all students have been enrolled in one of three "small learning communities." San Lorenzo High School's mission is "to challenge students to reach their highest level of academic achievement, to provide opportunities and support for social and emotional growth and to build connections to future education, assisting them to become successful members of the 21st century society."</p>

Bohannon Middle School

Bohannon Middle School is one of three middle schools in the More href="http://sanlorenzo.patch.com/admin/listings/san-lorenzo-unified-school-district">San Lorenzo Unified School District</a>. It serves almost 1,000 students in grades 6–8. The school received an Academic Performance Index ranking of 763 for the 2009-10 school year. </p> <p>Bohannon Middle School's student body is about 57 percent Latino, 16 percent white, 10 percent African American, 7 percent Filipino and 6 percent Asian. About 16 percent are considered English language learners.</p> <p>Additionally, about 47 percent receive free or reduced-cost meals.</p>

Arroyo High School

Arroyo High School is one of four high schools in the More href="http://sanlorenzo.patch.com/admin/listings/san-lorenzo-unified-school-district">San Lorenzo Unified School District</a>, serving more than 1,900 students grades 9-12. It received an Academic Performance Index of 771 for the 2009-10 school year.</p> <p>The student body is 39 percent Latino, 22 percent white, 17 percent Asian, 10 percent Filipino and seven percent African American. About eight percent are considered English language learners.</p> <p>Additionally, 22 percent of students recieve free or reduced meals.</p> <p>Beginning in the 2010-11 academic year, all students will enroll in one of three 'small learning communities.'</p> <p>Arroyo High School's mission is "to provide an environment in which all students will acquire the necessary skills to become responsible thinkers, who appreciate diversity and are productive citizens in their community."</p>

Grant Elementary School

Grant Elementary School is one of nine elementary schools in the More href="http://sanlorenzo.patch.com/san-lorenzo-unified-school-district">San Lorenzo Unified School District</a>. It serves nearly 400 students grades K-5 and will have grown to include preschool in the 2010-11 school year. The School received an Academic Performance Index ranking of 829 for the 2009-10 school year.</p> <p>Grant Elementary School's student body is about 49 percent Latino, 14 percent white, 12 percent African American, 8 percent Filipino and 6 percent Asian. About 47 percent of students are considered English-language learners.</p> <p>The School's special programs include music, reading recovery and laptop access in 4th and 5th grade classrooms.</p>

Royal Sunset High School

Edendale Middle School
