The San Lorenzo Unified School District was founded in 1859. Approximately 12,000 students from San Lorenzo and neighboring areas of unincorporated Alameda County attend its nine elementary schools (Bay, Colonial Acres, Corvallis, Dayton, Del Rey, Grant, Hesperian, Hillside and Lorenzo Manor) three middle schools (Edendale, Bohannonand Washington Manor) and four high schoools (San Lorenzo, Arroyo, East Bay Arts and Royal Sunset). The district also operates the San Lorenzo Adult School for returning students 18 and older.

For the 2010-11 school year, the district will offer preschool at seven of its nine elementary school sites. (For more information on the preschool program, click here.)

The student body is 49 percent Latino, 14 percent African American, 13 percent white, 11 percent Asian and 7 percent Filipino. Approximately 31 percent are considered English language learners and 46 percent receive free or reduced meals. (A newly-renovated Central Kitchen, home of Child Nutrition Services, debuted in July 2010.)

The average teacher-to-pupil ratio is 21:1, the average teacher salary is $66,945, slightly more than the state average. The district spends $5,832 per pupil — just slightly more than the statewide average for unified school districts, and just under the average for all districts in California.

San Lorenzo Unified School District's mission is to "work together with parents and the community to develop critical and creative thinkers who are knowledgeable, responsible, caring participants who contribute to a changing world."

The district is run by a five-member School Board. Dr. Dennis Byas is superintendent.
