PHOTOS: A Gift for All at Ashland's Holiday Party

More than 150 local children in need received a gift this year thanks to a free holiday party hosted at the Ashland Community Center Wednesday afternoon.

The Ashland Community Center made local kids' holidays a bit brighter Tuesday evening after they received a reading of Christmas stories, a chance to sit on Santa's lap and a free present.

The Ashland holiday party and gift giveaway was hosted by the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District in partnership with , Mercy Housing, Alameda County Sheriff's Office COPP Shop and leadership students. Hosted each year for nearly a decade, the party is focused on families in need and makes sure each child in the area receives a gift for the holidays.

Families with children 12-years-old or younger had to pre-register and sign up with a proof of residency, proof of income and idenfitication of the child living with them.

Safe Passages, an organization implementing youth programs in Oakland and San Lorenzo, had parents fill out surveys to learn about the community and better understand its needs in programming involving police mentorships.

All partnered organizations helped collect the 150 toys passed out. However, a majority came from Alameda County Sheriff Gregory Ahern's holiday luncheon on Monday.
