Massive One-Day Food Drive Today
Letter carriers will pick up your donations as part of Saturday's nationwide drive.
Bay Area cities will be joining in the fight against hunger Saturday with the 19th annual nationwide Stamp Out Hunger food drive.
Letter carriers will be collecting non-perishable food donations when they come to drop off mail, according to the Alameda County Community Food Bank.
The county food bank's single-day food drive aims to collect food for Bay Area food banks.
To take part, residents are encouraged to place a bag of non-perishable, healthy food near their home or business mailbox by Saturday morning before their mail is delivered.
Canned Vegetables and Fruits, dry Beans and pasta, peanut butter and canned tuna are just some examples of what can be collected.
Alameda County alone collected 203,000 pounds of food during last year's food drive, and the Bay Area collected more than 1 million pounds, according to Miranda Everitt, communications coordinator with Alameda County's food bank.
Approximately 77.1 million pounds of food was collected nationwide during the 2010 food drive.
