Bottom Line: Arroyo tried to run with Castro Valley and couldn't keep pace.

With back-to-back wins to open the season, the boys basketball team had to feel good about itself.

But those good feelings came crashing back to Earth Wednesday in the Hayward Area Athletic League opener.

The Dons were held scoreless for nearly the first four minutes and suffered an 87-43 loss to visiting Castro Valley.

"The gameplan coming in was to slow and control the tempo," Arroyo first-year coach Eddy Mangonon said. "Obviously we didn't do that."

The Dons (2-1, 0-1 HAAL) found themselves down 12-0 early and didn't scored a point until Angelo Williams' offensive rebound and putback with 4:08 left in the first.

They found themselves down 21-5 at the end of the first quarter.

To Arroyo's credit, no one has been able to stop Castro Valley (5-0, 1-0), which has averaged 76.8 points per game. Castro Valley is a North Coast Section Division I team. Arroyo is Division II.

Arroyo's James Davis, a Northern Colorado signee, scored a team-high 18 points. Teammate Khari Swift added 11 and Angelo Williams poured in eight.

The second quarter wasn't much easier for the Dons, who scored just six points compared to Castro Valley's 25. The Dons trailed 46-13 at the half.

"We did a little too much scoreboard watching," Mangonon said.

Arroyo's best quarter was the third, where it scored 20 points. The Dons put together a 6-3 run midway through the third to get to within 64-24. The Dons capped the third with a 7-1 run but still trailed 73-33 at the end of the third quarter.

"We had the whole team trying to get that 40-point shot," Mangonon said. "We're young and inexperienced, but that's not an excuse. As a coaching staff, our expectations are high."
