The Fun of Personal Growth and Achievement

Thursday night, March 6, 2014 was Janet's first time to lead a Toastmasters meeting. It went very well. She made a couple of changes from the usual agenda, including a three minute break to allow the speakers to get together with their evaluators and to allow people filling roles to hook up with an evaluator to sign off on their leadership project.

Most of the speakers gave talks that related in one way or another to the theme of "The Fun of Personal Growth and Achievement." We had a first time visitor who said that she enjoyed the meeting very much and would be back. One of the long time members acknowledged that this was Janet's first time being Toastmaster, and said she did a good job.

Janet was also able to incorporate the word of the day "emerge" into six of her comments.  As is often the case we had several members competing to use the word of the day as many times as possible when speaking.  Jim managed to use it five times during the time keeper's report, Patrick slipped it in three times during his introduction of the first speaker and during his evaluation.  Joel, as the "Ah" Counter championed the contest by using "emerge" eleven times!

Our speakers gave excellent presentations that stirred quite a range of emotion from all present.  Liliana started things off with a story about her boy friend's car being totaled recently and the trials and tribulations of the search for a new vehicle.  Ahn followed with a roller coaster ride through three major events in his life that had extreme lows that ended on high notes as he grew personally from each of them.  Sarah told us the very touching story of how she overcame a speech impediment and wound up giving an impromptu speech on employee living conditions to the board of directors of her employer in a very upscale resort area that resulted in revitalization of the area where most of the people lived.

Our first time guest, Catherine, volunteered to participate in Table Topics, the one to two minute impromptu speech portion of the meeting.  In all, six people participated in Table Topics, all of which were centered on the theme of "The Fun of Personal Growth and Achievement."
