Respect!

Respect was the theme of this week's meeting. Toastmaster Anh lead the meeting off by talking about respect, what it means to him and how it has affected his life.

The first speaker was Roger, who was working on Competent Communication Manual Project #5. His topic, Obamacare Revisited was a PowerPoint presentation on the Affordable Care Act. In it Roger explained why most people, either independently or through an agent, need to go through the Covered California web site, the guarantees provided by the ACA and the basic differences between the bronze, silver, gold and platinum plans.

Our second and final speaker for the evening was Eugenia. She was working from the Advanced Communication and Leadership Program booklet on "Specialty Speeches." The project was doing an interpretative reading. She chose William Poy Lee's book entitled, "The Eighth Promise" which is a son's tribute to his mother. Eugenia began with her personal connection to the author. She then read the section describing William's mother promises to her mother before leaving China to start a new life in America. The second interpretative reading is from William's mother viewpoint on the time he was nominated as Class President and his suspension from school.

As has been the case for several weeks, the Table Topics session was very spirited. Five attendees participated - Noah, Sachiko, Pam, and our two guests Will and Julie.  All five gave excellent responses to the questions, which were related to the respect theme.

Next up on the agenda were the vocal evaluations of the speeches. Fred evaluated Roger's speech and Pam evaluated Eugenia. Janet was the General Evaluator for the meeting. She gave her comments on the meeting and had the Timer, Grammarian and "Ah" Counter give their report. We welcomed new member  Julie into the club and adjourned for the evening.
