Feel The Fear and Do It Anyway

"Feel the fear and do it anyway" was the theme Roger chose for this meeting. He told us a relevant story from his life and asked each of the members attending to roles to do the same as they explained to the audience the roles. We heard several short, touching stories this evening.

Then it was time for the prepared speeches. Pam started off an amazing speech, her first from an Advanced Manual. She started out my acknowledging that many of us will never have the opportunity or the need to stand up in front of a group and give a prepared speech. She then told us, however, how we can use what we have learned from Toastmasters to have a better experience in everyday life. She gave us several examples including at family and business functions, and meeting new people in other organizations and networking events, much by using what we have learned from table topics and by taking on meeting roles. Most people at our meeting that night did not know what I knew. Pam was essentially speaking off the cuff. Even so, it came off as very well organized and polished. She found a new level tonight. Great job! Jacob followed her with a speech entitled "Selling Fragrance" as his 4th project from the Competent Communication Manual. Jacob is progressing very nicely! He told us his trials and tribulations as a salesperson, telling us of the rules he thought sales people were supposed to follow and how that list of rules changed after his performance review. His speech was witty and delivered with confidence. He used gestures and vocal variety to add punch and make it more enjoyable to the audience. Well done Jacob!

Table topics had an unusual format tonight. Vangie staged a debate of two teams or two members each. The first team, comprised of new members, each had one minute to give their argument in favor of the fairness of news presented by the news media. The other team, comprised of experienced members, each had one minute to speak on the contrary position. It was a different and fun approach, well received by all in attendance.

Janet lead the evaluation portion of the meeting. Jean and Jim respectively gave their oral evaluations of Pam and Jacob.

Rumors are flowing that we have a couple of new members. Could that be true Catherine and Cynthia?
