The Great Shakeout Comes to Castro Valley Schools

On Oct. 17 at 10:17 a.m., all the schools in the Castro Valley Unified School District will participate in The Great Shakeout, a nation-wide, earthquake preparation drill.  In California, preparing our students, staff and families is essential.  We have been very fortunate that no major California earthquake has occurred during school hours, but we must be prepared.  Earthquake preparation is part of every school's Emergency Plan.

Each year that the district has participated in The Great Shakeout, we have learned more about preparing our schools for a major earthquake.  In the event of a major earthquake, the district will take every possible step to protect our students and staff as well as communicate with parents.  I encourage you to review the resources on the The Great Shakeout webpage and discuss family preparation plans with your children.

The district works closely with local, state and federal agencies on our Emergency Plan and earthquake preparation.  The video above provides an example of what students are taught in preparation for an earthquake.
