Tuesday's School Board Meeting Wrap-Up

Classified staff layoffs and KIPP financial reports were on the agenda.

Tuesday's School Board meeting ended after just half an hour, but in all good reason: there were no major arguments, complaints, or concerns. 

Action was called for resolutions on personnel and educational to business services. Among all, the six board members approved them all unanimously without much or any debate. 

When it came to the second interim financial report of the KIPP King Collegiate High School and KIPP Summit Academy, all were in favor of passing the report. Afterwards, Board member,, congratulated the school and academy for "being one of the distinguished schools" in the San Lorenzo school district.

The main concern on many attendants' minds was how this year's budget will impact the jobs of staff and teachers in the district.

Superintendent, Dr. Dennis Byas said as far as layoffs go, decisions are still up in the air because no one really knows what the district or state budget is going to be just yet.

"The cuts are going to be brutal," he said. "But we haven't assigned anyone anywhere yet."

He said after the budget is revised in May based on tax revenues, the entire projection will be looked at, and possibly revised once again. By then, he said a more solid understanding should be formed on what the budget cuts will be like.
