Palomares Elementary Completes First Waste Audit of the School Year

Compared to last year, the school improved in lowering the percentage of garbage that could have gone in recycling or organics carts.

As a part of (CVSan) Green Ribbon Schools Program, on Friday, Nov. 18, completed the first waste audit of the school year.

CVSan Staff and the Palomares team of 10 students and one parent volunteer had a great time sorting through one day’s worth of garbage from the school to see what could actually have been placed in the recycling or organics carts.

In this great learning experience, students found that out of 33 gallons of garbage from the day before, only 36 percent was actually garbage and therefore a total of 64 percent could have gone in the recycling or organics cart.

This represented a significant improvement from last year’s audit done by Palomares students, which found that 83 percent could have gone in the recycling or organics cart.
