Five CVUSD Elementary Schools Named 2012 California Distinguished Schools

Chabot Elementary, Independent Elementary, Jensen Ranch Elementary, Palomares Elementary and Vannoy Elementary are among the 337 schools statewide that received the honor.

The California Department of Education announced the recipients of the 2012 California Distinguished Schools this week.

Among the winners were five Castro Valley elementary schools: , , ,  and .

"We are very pleased," said Castro Valley Unified School District Superintendent Jim Negri. "We already knew that these schools are Distinguished Schools, but now [State Superintendent of Public Instruction] Torlakson confirmed it."

According to the press release by the California Department of Education, schools must be “invited to apply for Distinguished School honor.” The press release states that “the application process consists of a written application, which includes a comprehensive description of two of the school's signature practices, and a county-led site validation review process, which validates the implementation of those signature practices.”  

Each school awarded receives a plaque and a flag.
