CVHS Students in Nation's Top 1%

Jeremy Meza, Alice Lin, John Lee, Alexander J. Bau and Hana Hartman in top 1 percent of high school students nationwide.

More than 1 million entrants from 20,000 schools nationwide compete for $33 million in scholarships as part of the National Merit Scholarship Program.

About half are named semifinalists, who then collectively represent the top 1 percent of all high school students nationwide. Besides coursework and SAT scores, the students submit essays and recommendations from principals.

Castro Valley High School made a strong showing in that elite group through five students: though Alexander J. Bau, Hana Hartman, John Lee, Alice Lin and Jeremy Meza.

They were honored Thursday night at the Castro Valley School Board meeting. Asked to say a few words, the students told the audience where they would attend college next fall.

Jeremy will attend Carnegie Mellon, where he hopes to study math and physics. John and Alice will attend UC Berkeley. Alexander plans to attend the University of North Carolina. (Hana was not at the meeting.)
