Two Ways to Get Involved With the Community

The Alameda County Arts Commission is working on plans for public art projects related to the construction of the new Cherryland Community Center (278 Hampton Road) and the new Cherryland Fire Station (19745-55 Meekland Avenue).

Currently, the Arts Commission is in the early planning stage and is working with stakeholders and partners to determine where the artwork will be located at the new facilities. The Arts Commission is interested in hearing from the community at this stage of the process. There are two ways for the community to be involved.

  • Community members are invited to participate in a short survey with questions that will help influence the artwork for the Community Center and the Fire Station. The survey responses will be shared with the selection committee who will be choosing artists for these projects and also with the artists who are invited to make proposals for the projects. The survey is available online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/cherrylandart. Responses to the survey will be collected through January 31, 2014.

  • The Arts Commission is also seeking 5-6 community members to serve on the committees to select the artists and the artwork for the Community Center and the Fire Station. Two unique committees will be formed, one for each project. The Arts Commission seeks to include a group of community members with diverse experiences and perspectives who are actively involved in the community and are interested in contributing in the success of the construction projects and the public artwork. No art experience is necessary. The committees will meet for two all-day meetings, once in February 2014 and once in July 2014. Community members interested in serving on one of these committees should complete a response form at http://tinyurl.com/Cherrylandresponse. Response forms are due by Friday, December 20, 2013. Paper copies of both the survey and the selection committee response form are available. Contact the Arts Commission office at (510) 208-9646 to receive a paper copy. English and Spanish versions are available.

More opportunities for community involvement are being planned for the future including a Public Art Roundtable in the Spring of 2014 with the artists making proposals for the projects and a display of the artists’ proposals will be on view for public comments in the Summer of 2014.
