A long political career ended in a way Rep. Pete Stark hoped it wouldn't Tuesday night.
The 19-term Bay Area congressman lost his congressional seat to fellow Democrat Eric Swalwell, a Dublin city councilman.
On Wednesday morning, Stark released a statement:
It has been my honor to serve the people of the East Bay for the last 40 years. I have worked hard to deliver results: accomplishments like writing the COBRA law to make health insurance portable between jobs, bringing the first computers to schools, and crafting President Obama’s groundbreaking health care law.
I went to Washington by running against an unpopular war and for women’s rights, opportunity for children and dignity for seniors. I leave knowing that the landscape has changed, but the needs of my constituents remain.
I congratulate Mr. Swalwell on his victory. I am happy to be of assistance in the future.
I want to thank all the wonderful people I met along this fabulous journey and I will remember them fondly. Together, we have made a real difference.
On his Facebook page, some of his 1,900 fans were posting their condolences while others were saying good riddance.

"It is a sad day. Pete you are the only rep I have ever known. A pillar of progressive liberal politics."
"Thank you, Mr. Stark. You've been one of the the greatest Congressmen ever. I didn't get to vote for you this year, because they moved Alameda out of your district..."
"Got three mailers from you today. Never saw you in my home town, never saw you in a debate, never saw you walking the neighborhood. I feel like I should send you a map to Livermore, but I suspect it won't matter in a few days..."
"Bye bye Peter. There's no room for such arrogance and insults to constituents."
