San Lorenzo and Castro Valley Teachers to Join Forces in 'Stand Up for Schools' Rally

The San Lorenzo Education Association and the Castro Valley Teachers Association will rally in front of Castro Valley High School's stadium on Thursday, March 1.

The San Lorenzo Education Association (SLEA) will join the Castro Valley Teachers Association (CVTA) to send a loud message to lawmakers that school budget cuts will no longer be tolerated.

At recent and Castro Valley Unified School District and San Lorenzo Unified School District board meetings, members reviewed the "best" and "worst" case scenarios of Gov. Jerry Brown's budget proposal.

Based on the passage or failure of the tax initiative during November's election, CVUSD is looking at $400,000 to $3.5 million in a total loss of funding.

For San Lorenzo, those numbers are higher — between $600,000 and $4 million — and include 133 pink slips to be issued out to temporary teachers by March 15.

The "Stand Up for Schools" rally be held on Thursday, March 1 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in front of the stadium on Heyer Avenue and Redwood Road.

Dean Vogel, President of the 325,000-member California Teachers Association, is among several guest speakers that also include CTA Director Terri Jackson, CVTA President John Green, California School Employees Association President Jay Espitallier, students and more.

Teachers are encouraged to wear their union T-shirts and invite their family and friends.
