Same-Sex Marriage Supporters Defer Castro Valley Protest

Local activists had planned to rally at the Post Office on income tax deadline day but decided to forgo the demonstration due to the Boston tragedy.

 

Local same-sex marriage advocates decided Monday wasn't the day to protest the fact that they must file as single people and therefore pay higher taxes because their unions aren't recognized by the federal government.

The Castro Valley chapter of Marriage Equality USA had called a rally at the post office at 20283 Santa Maria Avenue as last-day income tax filers dropped off their returns.

But as the aftershocks of the Boston Marathon bombings rippled through the public consciousness, organizers called off the protest and asked supporters to look for another day to demonstrate their interest in two cases now before the United States Supreme Court that could change the groundrules for marriage.
