Poll: Should Assemblywoman Hayashi Continue to Represent the 18th Assembly District?

After weeks of denials, Assemblywoman Mary Hayashi (D-Hayward) .

She was sentenced to three years probation and ordered to stay at least 50 feet away from the Neiman Marcus in San Francisco, in October.

In a bizarre twist, Hayashi’s lawyer told reporters that his client is being treated for a benign brain tumor that may have affected her judgment then but is not a factor in her decision-making now.

After Hayashi was apprehended on Oct. 25, and had merely forgotten to pay.

Friday’s plea and the tumor revelation do not directly contradict those assertions.

But the episode raises questions about her fitness to represent the 18th Assembly District, which includes Hayward, parts of Oakland, San Leandro, Dublin, Pleasanton, the unincorporated areas of Castro Valley, San Lorenzo, Ashland and Cherryland. She also continues to chair the Assembly Committee on Business, Professions and Consumer Protections.
