County, City Rescue Of San Leandro Hospital In Doubt

County official tells city rescue could cost three to four times what was previously estimated.

A plan by Alameda County health officials to lead a rescue of San Leandro Hospital may be falling apart, according to a report in the Contra Costa Times.

The county and the city of San Leandro had previously pledged $3 million each to buy the hospital from Sutter Health to insure that its emergency room remains open, and Eden Township Healthcare District had promised to kick in another $1.25 million.

But Wright Lassiter, CEO of Alameda County Medical Center, has told city officials that the joint operation could cost three to four times as much.

Sutter Health, which owns San Leandro Hospital and recently rebuilt Eden Hospital in Castro Valley, has not yet announced what it plans to do in San Leandro.
