Castro Valley Boulevard Poised For Paving

When asphalt is laid on Tuesday and Wednesday, this ugly duckling will start becoming a swan. But while the paving is being done, expect some big honking delays.

The scent of burning tar will be in the air on Tuesday and Wednesday when paving vehicles rumble down Castro Valley Boulevard in one of the last big steps in the roughly 16-month-long Streetscape program.

The final major asphalt paving will occur from Redwood Road to San Miguel.

On Tuesday, the contractors will asphalt the lanes adjacent to the sidewalk, while the lanes adjacent to the median will remain open.

On Wednesday, the asphalting will switch to the 2 lanes adjacent to the medians, while the lanes adjacent to the sidewalk will be open

On both days the four-lane street will be reduced to a two-lane crawl.

So avoid the Boulevard if at all possible and, if you must transit the strip, be prepared for delays.

Paving will remove a significant eyesore. But officials of the Alameda County Community Development Agency said the project will still take about six weeks to finish.

That time will be used to landscape the medians and power up the decorative streetlights that will gussy up the Boulevard and allow drivers to make turns once again.

If everything stays on schedule, by Halloween it will be a treat rather than a trick to drive down Castro Valley Boulevard.

Meanwhile, enjoy the artist's rendition of the improved Boulevard and imagine what the downtown will look like when the project is complete.

Are you ready for this to be over? Will it have been worth the commotion and congestion?
