On Saturday, ALCO Fire responded to medical emergency calls at the facility — one around 10:30 a.m. and the other at 3 p.m.

When ALCO Fire returned at 3 p.m., the fire captain noticed something was “off” about the facility. There were only 2 staff members, a cook and a janitor, found with the remaining patients.

“These two were doing the best they could to take care of the patients, but it became too much,” said Nelson.

It was after questioning the very little staff members left when the fire captain was led to the notice on the front door stating the facility was to be closed on Oct. 24.

“The door was always open, so crews never saw the sign,” ALCO Fire Deputy Chief Dave Rocha. “The staff never mentioned the facility closure to fire crews until Saturday afternoon.”

According to Nelson the Department of Social Services, FBI Health Care Fraud Investigators and others will be meeting tomorrow to investigate more about this case. No arrests have been made so far.

“There’s a lot of documents to look at regarding this case,” said Nelson. “This case will take a very long time.”

The sheriff’s office is focusing on finding the rest of the facility’s patients before talking to the employees.
