Two Injured in Al's Food Market Parking Lot Accident

Two people suffer moderate injuries after being hit by a car in the parking lot of Al's Food Market on Wednesday.

Two people suffered moderate injuries after they were hit in the parking lot of by a car accelerating in reverse Wednesday afternoon, according to CHP Public Information Officer Daniel Jacowitz.

Castro Valley resident Joanne Munns, 79, got in her Mercedes around 2 p.m. and accelerated as she drove in reverse, Jacowitz said.

Castro Valley residents Donald Squaglia, 60, and William Hand, 65, were struck by the car. Hand is known by locals and Al's Food Market employees as "Bill" and is usually found barbecuing in the market's parking lot.

The two were rushed to a local hospital for observation after suffering moderate injuries, Jacowitz said. Munns was uninjured.

Two other cars were damaged in the accident. Jacowitz said Munns' car hit a pickup truck, which collided with Volkswagen.

"It appears her foot may have gotten stuck on the accelerator [as she reversed] or she may have mistaken the accelerator for the brake," Jacowitz said.

CHP is investigating the incident.
