Two Burglary Suspects in Custody, One at Large Following Extensive Hayward Search

Suspect rams police car head-on in attempt to escape.

Bay City News Service—Two burglary suspects are in custody and one is still at large following an extensive police search of a Hayward neighborhood Wednesday afternoon, a police lieutenant said.

Police arrested one suspect in a shed and convinced another to surrender to officers near the 2800 block of Darwin Street after searching the neighborhood house by house for several hours, Lt. Roger Keener said.

The incident began at about 9:30 a.m. when a woman in the 2600 block of Leeward Street reported that she thought there were people in her house, Keener said.

The woman told police it sounded like things were being moved around, so she barricaded herself in a room.

Keener said the police response was heightened because residents run the risk of being physically assaulted if they confront suspects in their homes.

The first officer to arrive on Leeward Street saw a car speeding directly at him as the driver apparently tried to flee. The vehicle crashed into the patrol car head-on, which left both vehicles inoperable, Keener said.

Three men ran from the suspect vehicle, and the officer tried to detain one. The man was able to escape, though, and the officer put out suspect descriptions and information about the direction they were headed.

Officers responding to the initial burglary report were able to set up a perimeter on nearby Darwin Street and in adjacent areas, Keener said.

Police then began searching for the suspects house by house.

Officers found one of the men at about 12:45 p.m. in a shed behind a home on Darwin Street.

The man allegedly refused to comply with police commands, so a K-9 unit was used to take him into custody, Keener said. The man was taken to a hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Less than two hours later, the search focused on a house in the 2800 block of Darwin Street. A crisis negotiation team was called the home.

"Oddly enough, the suspect answered the phone and identified himself as the person we were looking for," Keener said.

The man agreed to come to the front door and was taken into custody at about 2:35 p.m.

The third suspect was still outstanding Wednesday afternoon.

It was unclear whether what role he played in the burglary, Keener said.

"The suspects in custody will be interviewed, and we'll try to identify the third suspect," Keener said.

He said it was too early to know what, if anything, could be ascertained from the suspects who were arrested. Police Wednesday had not released the suspects' names.
