Tuesday evening chase started when a sheriff stopped a man on a bicycle and he ran away on foot.

Alameda County sherriffs deputies descended on a San Lorenzo neighborhood Tuesday but failed to capture a man who ran away on foot after a routine stop, authorities said.

The action went down about 6:10 pm Tuesday night, according to a Patch reader who saw a man running away from sheriffs on Via Manzanas.

The eyewitness said sheriffs also blocked off Via Mirabel as they tried to drop a net over the area.

"They were stopping pedestrians and cars and checking people's ID," the reader told Patch. "My brother tried to tell them that he ran into Sovereign Square Apartments and that they said they had it covered."

A helicopter was observed overhead but it was not part of the manhunt but rather a news helicopter that heard the police radio traffic, according to Alameda County Sheriffs Department spokesman Sergeant J.D. Nelson.

Nelson said the incident began when a sheriffs deputy stopped a man on a bicylce. The man, who was on probation, ran away and managed to evade immediate capture.
