UPDATE: Sheriffs Unsuccessful in Finding Ashland Shooting Suspect

Police weren't able to find a suspect in a shooting that left a man in critical condition this afternoon, according to police.

The suspect in a shooting that left a man in critical condition was not found in a search of an apartment in unincorporated Alameda County this afternoon.

The shooting was reported shortly before 1 p.m. in the 16000 block of Mateo Street in Ashland, just outside of San Leandro, Alameda County Sheriff's Sgt. J.D. Nelson said.

A witness reported that the shooter had run into a nearby apartment complex, and deputies established a perimeter there to search for the suspect.

Deputies entered an apartment at around 5:45 p.m. that a witness said the suspect might be in, but the apartment was empty, Nelson said.

Investigators remained on the scene conducting interviews with bystanders this evening.

Nelson said the injured man was taken to a hospital.
