Police Say Woman Was Shot After She Threatened Officers with Handgun

The 62-year-old woman was killed after officers say she advanced on them and refused to drop the handgun she was holding.

By Bay City News—

A 62-year-old woman was killed in an officer-involved shooting in Hayward Tuesday night after she reportedly threatened an officer with a handgun, police said today.

Officers responded to a multi-unit apartment complex in the 21000 block of Foothill Blvd. at about 7:15 p.m. to check on the welfare of a woman living in an apartment who had made several 911 calls.

Two Hayward police officers arrived and contacted the woman. While speaking with the woman, she displayed a handgun "in a threatening manner," Hayward police Sgt. Eric Melendez said.

Officers retreated to the parking lot of the complex while ordering the woman to drop the weapon, according to Melendez.

The woman reportedly advanced toward the officers and when she refused to drop her gun, one officer fired his duty weapon at the woman.

Emergency personnel transported the woman to an area hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her identity has not been released.

The officer involved in the shooting has been employed with the Hayward Police Department for one year. The Hayward Police Department Investigations Bureau will be investigating the incident along with the Alameda County District Attorney's Office.

Why can't the cops just shoot people in the leg or arm? Do they really need to go for a kill shot?

Because when you are in fear for your life you do whatever you can to protect yourself. Trying to hit a limb is something for the movies, it is not real life. Follow that up with an old saying "play stupid games, win stupid prizes"
