Union City Parolee Arrested After Chase Through Castro Valley Backyards

A sheriff's K-9 unit captured the suspect Tuesday afternoon after a five-minute car chase that dead-ended on Gregory Street, near Center Street and Edwards Lane.

Bay City News — A parolee being chased by police hopped fences in Castro Valley backyards Tuesday afternoon before a sheriff's K-9 unit captured him on Alana Road, sheriff's deputies and area residents said.

Roads were blocked as a helicopter circled above the neighborhoods around Edwards Lane near Center Street, near and schools, residents said.

Alameda County Sheriff's deputies and Fremont police took the suspect, a 28-year-old Union City man, into custody after a five-minute car chase that began at in Castro Valley, sheriff's Sgt. Ray Kelly said.

The deputies were assisting Fremont police, a sheriff's spokesman said. They spotted the suspect, who had an outstanding warrant for his arrest, as he was driving away from the motel and tried to pull him over around 1 p.m., Kelly said.

The suspect did not stop until he hit a dead end on Gregory Street, Kelly said. He began hopping over fences to escape capture as police surrounded the neighborhood, Kelly said.

Police did not find a weapon on the man, Kelly said. He declined to release the suspect's name, citing an ongoing investigation.

No one was injured during the pursuit, Kelly said.
