A man fatally struck by a BART train near the South Hayward station on Tuesday night has been identified by the Alameda County coroner's bureau as 28-year-old Geovanni Herniquez.

Herniquez was struck at about 11:25 p.m. Tuesday by a Richmond-bound train on the tracks just south of the station at 28601 Dixon St. in Hayward.

The death caused a major disruption of BART service Tuesday night and Wednesday morning because investigators had to wait until daylight to make sure they collected all of the evidence before clearing the scene, BART spokesman Jim Allison said.

Allison said the death, which occurred in a dark and remote area, is being considered an "unattended death" because there were no witnesses in the case.
