A man was shot near the Occupy Oakland encampment late this afternoon, Thursday, witnesses told the San Francisco Chronicle, and BART reported major systemwide delays due to police activity at the scene.
The shooting occurred about 5 p.m. outside the 12th Street BART station at 14th Street and Broadway, the Chronicle said.
About four to six shots were fired, and the victim was taken away in an ambulance, the newspaper reported. The Chronicle cited two longtime Occupy Oakland participants who said they didn't recognize the victim and didn't believe the shooting was connected the encampment.
At about 6:45, ABC7 reported that Oakland Police Chief Jordan said that the victim in the shooting had died.
BART said the 12th Street station was closed and that there were systemwide delays up to 30 minutes.
