More than a dozen police cars from several law enforcement agencies responded to the area around the complex Tuesday night, according to employees at several local businesses near the scene.

The employees, who didn't want their names published, all said officers from several agencies including the Alameda County Sheriff's Office and California Highway Patrol shut down the street for more than an hour.

A Hayward police officer who happened to be in a nearby apartment on unrelated business heard the shots, stepped outside and saw people running in different directions, said Alameda County Sheriff's Sgt. J.D. Nelson.

Deputies responded and found Bradford suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, Nelson said.

Bradford was taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, where he died.

Police searched the neighborhood but didn't locate the shooter, and no arrests have been made in the case.

The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.

The manager of the apartment complex declined to comment on the incident.
