Former Logan Teacher Arrested on Suspicion of Having Sex With Student

Police arrested Peter Kolesnikov Thursday without incident.

A former  teacher was arrested Thursday on suspicion of having sex with a student, police said.

Peter Kolesnikov, 38, faces 22 counts of sexual assault, including charges of statutory rape, oral copulation of a minor and communicating with a minor with criminal intent, according to Cmdr. Ben Horner of the .

Authorities said Kolesnikov was arrested without incident by Union City police while on his way to meet with the juvenile victim at an undisclosed location in Hayward.

Police received information on Tuesday morning alleging that Kolesnikov, an English teacher who also taught art classes, had engaged in sexual relations with a 16-year-old girl over a nine-month period, starting last year in March and ending in November. Investigators then served search warrants at Kolesnikov’s residences in San Francisco and Berkeley.

According to the , Kolesnikov has been on leave since the beginning of the school year and has not worked for the district since last June. The leave of absence is unrelated to the case, police said.

The victim, now 17, told police the relationship began with kissing and grew into sexual encounters in private homes and motels in Alameda County.

Kolesnikov is being held at Santa Rita Jail on $1 million bail and is scheduled to be arraigned at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Fremont Hall of Justice.

Authorities in Union City have worked with the New Haven Unified School District to ensure the safety of all students in the district, Horner said.

Police believe that there may be additional victims and are urging parents to speak to their children about the incident.

With word of Kolesnikov's arrest spreading rapidly Friday, former students have taken to social media to voice their support for the former Logan teacher, whom many refer to as "Mr. K."

"That was my teacher! No way he would do that. Best teacher I had," one former student wrote on Twitter.

Another student, however, wrote that Kolesnikov "was always talkin bout sex" in art class. "He was the coolest teacher ever though!," the student added.

According to a Wikipedia article about sexual abuse in the American education system, harrassment is "common and six in 10 students will suffer some form of physical sexual abuse." Based on a 2002 American Association of University Women study, of those who are abused, 38 percent were abused by teachers.

A child trauma institute estimates that 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 7 boys will be sexually abused during childhood.

Effects of the abuse include:

"Students experience a wide range of effects from sexual harassment that impact their academics including: have trouble sleeping, loss of appetite, decreased participation in class, avoid a study group, think about changing schools, change schools, avoid the library, change major, not going to a professor/ teaching assistant’s office hours. Students may experience multiple effects or just one..."

Just think with your move to Texas, you wouldn't have to pay all these administrators overly generous, bloated salary and benefits packages. You should move before your asked for another tax increase for the overly generous, bloated salary and benefits of the local Police and Firefighters. Because that's is coming next. I'm sure you wouldn't be happy with that, so make the move to Irvine Texas now! THE BALD HEADED RAT

When the city takes it upon themselves to defy state law & ban cannabis dispensaries the conservative moral crusaders applaud them, although it doesn't prevent one person from smoking it in Union City. When a majority of voters raise the taxes on everyone at the ballot box these hypocrites are outraged & rile against the system. While being illegal has never been a deterent to marijuana use try not paying your property taxes & see what happens ! When you get all your information from FOX News & Rush Limbaugh you have trouble discerning fact from fiction. If you haters invested as much money in our children's futures as you spend time maligning our public schools Union City would be a happier place for everyone to live ! I suggest you all move to a more conservative state where your vote could swing an electoral vote Romney's way. Because this is a blue state & Obama will win by double digits here no matter how much the Republicans spend. Just ask Meg Whitman who spent $160 million losing to Jerry "Governor Moonbeam" Brown. Now there's a pain that's going to linger for a longtime, that must have been disheartening for the Republican base.

Or I could stay here and annoy liberals like yourself. Apparently there were enough of us last May to stifle your last attempt at a new tax. I think it just shows your frustration that there is a conservative resistance of any kind. I have no desire to move to Texas. I grew up in New York where it's even more liberal than here... so I have no problem dealing with you nut cases.

Is every one of your posts about your right to have weed at cheap price? I watch Fox News and listen to Rush Limbaugh and I'm all for legalizing marijuana. The problem is when you get all your news from the fist pounding nut jobs on MSLSD that you start to lose your sense of reality (it is a psychedelic drug afterall). So what if Obama wins by double digits in CA? How does CA's 55 electoral votes win him the election? I have a better idea... why doesn't CA just fall off into the ocean or secede from the USA and become the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia. Obama will win CA (and not by double digits) but he will lose where it counts in Ohio, Virginia, Florida, Missouri, etc). And FYI, take a look at the 2000 or 2004 election maps by COUNTY and you will see other than the Bay Area and LA and a sliver of the coastline, CA is actually quite red, especially once you cross the "Orange Curtain"

No, ":disheartening" is when your party loses 65 US House Seats and 680 state legislative seats (and is about to lose the US Senate and White House).... THAT is disheartening.
