Local Youth Group Invites Community to Support 'Silence the Violence' Protest

Furthering Youth Inspiration (FYI) will hold a "Silence the Violence" protest Thursday afternoon to take a stand against violence in the community.

A local youth group invites the community to take a stand again violence through a silent protest Thursday afternoon.

Furthering Youth Inspiration (FYI), a youth leadership group that's part of the Alameda County Deputy Sheriffs’ Activities League (DSAL) in the San Leandro/Ashland area, supports preteen and teenage youth by planning and hosting youth events in the community. It focuses on subjects such as violence, education, teen pregnancy, health and youth empowerment.

On Thursday, Aug. 25, FYI will host its Silence the Violence Protest at the corner of San Leandro's 159th Ave. and E. 14th Street at 4 p.m.

The group wants to demonstrate the importance of silencing the violence in these neighborhoods by wearing duct tape on their mouths and holding signs in their hands with quotes, pictures and drawings related to the violence and its negative affect in the Ashland
and San Lorenzo communities.

They hope to raise awareness around the East Bay and beyond about the need for youth to stop fighting, shooting and harming each
other.

This Saturday, Aug. 27, FYI will also hold its first annual skateboarding competition, called "Grills & Wheels," at Jack Holland Sr. Park on the corner of 163rd Avenue & E. 14th Street in San Leandro.

They want Ashland youth to kick off the school year by enjoying the fun of skateboarding, chalking positive messages on the streets and other activities.

Local businesses are sponsoring this event by providing food, prizes and raffles that relate to going back to school, including school supplies, free haircuts, skateboarding equipment, etc.
