High School Football Game Ends in Fight, Arrests

Kids got a bit worked up Friday night after a game, causing a few fights to break out, police said.

Maybe it was the lightning. Or maybe just some bad energy from a canceled football game.

Whatever it was, several charged-up kids sparked a bunch of fights in the stadium parking lot after referees canceled Friday's football game because of the stormy weather.

Officers detained about 20 students and arrested four more on suspicion of resisting arrest and obstructing police.

The incident wasn't as bad as it looked considering the number of officers on scene, said Sgt. Kyle Ritter, of the Alameda County Sheriff's Office.

"It was not that big of an incident," Ritter said. "There was a dance and a game. And after the game when the people were pushed out of the stadium there were little fights breaking out in the parking lots."

The game ended suddenly after the host Trojans went ahead 7-0 on a 16-play, 65-yard drive, according to Bay Area News Group.

Refs called a half-hour delay in the game after only two plays by the visiting Newark Memorial High Cougars because of the sudden electrical storm.

The game was called off completely when the weather only got worse.

That's when things got a little out of hand.

Ritter said no one got hurt and there was no property damage from the fights beyond a car one of the kids punched.

"There were no injuries from the fights ... well, there was the one kid who got a little out of hand and tripped on a curb and scraped his hand," Ritter said.

Some rumors were also flying around that several of the kids involved in the scuffle had guns and knives but Ritter said that was untrue and there were, "no weapons whatsoever."

Friday's game won't be replayed and no winner was announced. Because it was a non-league contest, it won't affect either team's record.
