Gunman Shoots Up Undercover Cop Car, Escapes

Officer not injured as shooter speeds off at up to 100 mph.

Bay City News — Police are looking for a gunman in dark-colored Acura who shot at an undercover police car Wednesday night, and then escaped by speeding down Interstate 580.

The detective driving the unmarked car was not injured.

The shooting occurred about 9:22 pm Wednesday in the vicinity of Anza Way and Aloha Dr.

Detectives were on a narcotics investigation in the area when they observed a suspicious, dark-colored Acura driving around.

A detective sergeant followed the Acura in his undercover vehicle.

On the 300 block of Aloha Dr., the suspect vehicle made a u-turn and drove directly towards the sergeant's car.

As the suspect drove past the unmarked police car, the driver rolled down his window and shot at the detective from a distance of approximately six feet.

At least five rounds struck the front quarter panel of sergeant's vehicle, but the officer was not injured.

The sergeant pursued the suspect vehicle through city streets, onto south bound Interstate 880, along Highway 238 and into Castro Valley.

At times the chase reached speeds over 100 miles per hour.

The suspect escaped westbound onto Interstate 580 and was last seen near Highway 13. 

There is no description of the suspect.  Detectives are actively working the case.
