A portion of San Miguel Avenue was blocked by firefighters and a sheriff's deputy after a gas line was severed by PG&E Friday morning.
The half-inch gas line was cut while East Bay Municipal Utility District crews were digging to change a water line around 9 a.m. by an apartment complex.
Firefighters from Station 25, located right next to where the gas line was cut, headed over to help along with PG&E and the Alameda County Sheriff's Office.
Between six and eight nearby townhomes were evacuated as a precaution according to the Contra Costa Times.
The gas leak was contained around 10 a.m. and repairs to the line are expected to be completed before noon the Contra Costa Times reports.
