Firefighter Injured While Rescuing Horse in Castro Valley

The Alameda County Fire Department shared a video showing a few seconds of the rescue.

Firefighters rescued a horse today after it fell 50 feet down an embankment near Castro Valley, according to an Alameda County Fire Department spokeswoman.

Firefighters responded around 10:30 a.m. to an area near the 9500 block of Crow Canyon Road, according to fire department spokeswoman Aisha Knowles. Knowles said emergency crews called a veterinarian to the scene to sedate the horse, so crews could safely secure the animal and haul it back up the embankment.

One firefighter was injured in the rescue attempt when the horse kicked him. The firefighter was transported to the hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening and for further evaluation, according to Knowles.

The veterinarian is expected to examine the horse and check for any injuries.
