CHP Car Crashes into Porch of Hayward Home, Ending High-Speed Chase That Began on I-580

The officer was injured and the suspect, who fled on foot, was arrested by Hayward police.

BAY CITY NEWS – A California Highway Patrol officer was injured Tuesday morning when  his car crashed into a Hayward home's front porch during a high-speed chase that began on Highway 580, a CHP spokesman said.

The highway chase continued onto Foothill Boulevard, then into a residential neighborhood, where the officer's and the suspect's car collided, CHP Officer Daniel Jacowitz said.

The suspect fled on foot but was taken into custody by Hayward police, Jacowitz said. A loaded handgun was retrieved from the suspect's vehicle, he said.

The chase began around 10 a.m. with an officer trying to stop an eastbound motorist  in a silver Dodge sedan who was driving at more than 100 mph, Jacowitz said.

The suspect refused to yield and exited Highway 580 at Foothill Boulevard, then led the officer on a high-speed chase through residential neighborhoods, Jacowitz said.

The suspect tried to ram the CHP car several times during the pursuit, Jacowitz said.

The suspect's car and the CHP officer's car collided near Cottage Park Drive and Mahogany Street, Jacowitz said.

The CHP officer lost control of the car, which crashed onto the front porch of a home. The officer suffered minor to moderate injuries and was taken to a hospital.

The suspect was taken to a hospital for observation, Jacowitz said. The incident remains under investigation.
