Overturned Big Rig Catches Fire, Blocks Lanes on Eastbound I-580 in Castro Valley
The driver of the big-rig was not injured in the initially-reported solo accident but CHP officials are investigating a possible second vehicle that was involved in the crash.

A flipped big-rig on eastbound Interstate Highway 580 in Castro Valley backed up traffic for more than four hours Tuesday night and into this morning, according to a California Highway Patrol officer.
An 18-wheeler flipped onto its side just west of Eden Canyon Road at 8:05 p.m. Tuesday. A Sig-alert was issued at 8:09 p.m. and remained in place until 12:31 a.m. this morning, according to CHP Officer Peter Van
Eckhardt.

The accident blocked three lanes, but a spilled diesel fuel fire prompted a full closure of the highway in the eastbound direction, Van Eckhardt said. One lane reopened at 8:30 p.m. when the fire was put out.
Van Eckhardt said there were reports of traffic throughout the night with cars backed up as far west as the Interstate Highway 238-580 interchange near Hayward.

The crash was initially reported as a solo incident, however, CHP officials are investigating a possible second vehicle that was involved in the crash, according to Van Eckhardt.
The truck was finally uprighted and towed away and spilled diesel and debris cleared by 12:31 a.m. this morning.
