Anonymous Tip Leads to Arrest of Suspect Involved in Fatal Stabbing

The stabbing occurred on Feb. 15 behind Buffalo Bill's Brew Pub in Hayward.

By Bay City News—

An anonymous tip led to the arrest Tuesday night of a suspect wanted in connection with Hayward's second homicide this year, police said. Hayward resident Roger Pacheco, 19, was arrested after an extensive search of a neighborhood in unincorporated Hayward.

Pacheco is one of four people charged in the fatal stabbing of 24-year-old Jayson Dutt in a parking lot behind a bar on Feb. 15, police and prosecutors said. The alleged accomplices were arrested shortly after the stabbing but Pacheco remained at large until Tuesday.

Officers located Pacheco after receiving an anonymous tip that he was hiding at an address in unincorporated Hayward on Tuesday afternoon, Sgt. Eric Melendez said. Police set up surveillance around the home at Lowell Avenue between Medford Road and Hampton Avenue on Tuesday evening, Melendez said.

Once police identified Pacheco as one of many people going into and out of the home, they attempted to make contact with him between 8 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., according to Melendez.

However, he fled from the front of the home and ran into the neighborhood. Police canvassed an area roughly bordered by Western Boulevard and Medford and Lowell avenues with the help of police K-9 units and Alameda County sheriff's deputies, Melendez said.

A helicopter from the California Highway Patrol in Napa also canvassed the area by air for Pacheco for about 30 to 40 minutes, he said. At about 10 p.m., Pacheco was found hiding in a nearby residence and authorities took him into custody, Melendez said.

The stabbing of Dutt took place behind Buffalo Bill's Brew Pub at 1082 B St. around 12:20 a.m. on Feb. 15, possibly stemming from an argument between two groups of people, according to police. Police said four suspects attacked Dutt and knocked him to the ground, punching and kicking him before one of the four stabbed him several times in the chest and side.

Three suspects, identified as Daniel Ramirez, 29, his brother Robert Ramirez, 27, and Jose Vasquez, 19, allegedly fled the scene in a Mercedes-Benz but were arrested after crashing the car about two miles away on Interstate Highway 880, according to police.

The three were arrested and, along with Pacheco, were charged with murder. Robert Ramirez was also charged with possession of cocaine. Pacheco has a prior conviction for assault with a firearm, police said. He is due in court for arraignment Thursday. The other three suspects are scheduled to return to court April 17 for a plea hearing.
