Several businesses in San Lorenzo were evacuated Tuesday night after an ammonia leak was discovered at Sara Lee Foods, an Alameda County fire spokeswoman said.

Firefighters responded to a report of an ammonia leak at the company, located at 2411 Baumann Ave., at about 10:10 p.m., fire spokeswoman Aisha Knowles said.

With the assistance of Alameda County sheriff's deputies, all the employees at the facility were evacuated, Knowles said.

Knowles said the Sara Lee facility uses liquid ammonia to support its refrigeration system.

A hazardous materials team entered the facility and secured the leak about three hours later, at about 1:20 a.m., she said.

As a precaution, authorities also evacuated businesses along nearby Grant Avenue, west of Worthley Drive, Knowles said.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the leak is under investigation by Sara Lee personnel, Knowles said.

A Sara Lee representative was not immediately available for comment.
