Detectives are investigating an alleged home invasion robbery that ended when the victim fatally shot a male suspect and wounded a female suspect at a residence in Hayward on Sunday evening, a police sergeant said.

Shortly before 5:30 p.m. Sunday, the Hayward Police Department received a 911 call reporting that a male had been shot during a possible home invasion robbery, Sgt. Eric Melendez said.

Officers responded to a single-family residence in the 21000 block of Western Boulevard and met with a male victim, according to Melendez. A male suspect, who had been fatally shot, was inside the residence when officers arrived, Melendez said.

The victim told police he was at home with a friend when multiple suspects attempted a home invasion robbery, Melendez said. According to Melendez, the victim fatally shot a male suspect and injured a female suspect. He told police that additional suspects had fled from the residence before officers arrived.

About 15 minutes later, Hayward police received a call from an area hospital reporting that a woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds had been dropped off at the hospital and was in critical condition, according to the sergeant. Melendez said the woman is a suspect in the home invasion robbery.

The incident remains under investigation, Melendez said.
