Alameda County District Attorney Given 2 Awards

The United States Congressional Victims’ Rights Caucus awarded Alameda County District Attorney Nancy E. O’Malley the Lois Haight Award of Excellence and Innovation for her outstanding contributions to the field of victims’ rights. This award honors a professional whose efforts have had a significant impact on local, state, national or international public policy development and implementation that promote dignity, respect, rights and services for victims of crime.

Congressman Eric Swalwell, who presented the award to D.A. O’Malley commented, “I’m privileged to have presented Nancy the prestigious Lois Haight Award of Excellence and Innovation from the House Victims’ Rights Caucus. Nancy’s creative initiatives and advocacy are helping to make life better and bring justice to victims across Alameda County and the nation. She is a true and tireless champion for victims, and I can think of no one more deserving of this award.” 

This week, D.A. O’Malley also received the 2014 Visionary Voice Award. Given by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC), this is a national award honoring leaders in sexual violence prevention. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. In observance of this event, NSVRC annual Visionary Voice Award highlights individuals throughout the country whose prevention work is making a significant impact in their communities. The award honors a wide-range of individuals working in various professions to end sexual violence and promote safe, healthy communities. Nominees are selected by state, tribal, or territory anti-sexual violence coalitions.

“I am extremely honored to have received these two remarkable awards,” says D.A. O’Malley. “Throughout my career as an Alameda County Prosecutor, I have dedicated myself to serving victims of crime and to seeking justice in sexual assault crimes. As the District Attorney, I am committed to ensuring that my Office treats every victim with respect and dignity and that victims’ rights and the prevention of sexual violence remain at the forefront of our work.”

Both of these awards coincide with current national focus. This week is National Victims’ Rights Week, and the month of April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. One of the first D.A. Offices in the country to establish a division dedicated to the assistance of victims and witnesses, the Alameda County D.A.’s Office Victim/Witness Assistance Division celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.  

Under the leadership of D.A. O’Malley, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office remains a leader in innovation and dedication in its efforts to better serve, help and make whole victims of crime.
