The deputy was injured after trying to break up a melee between several people in an apartment complex in Castro Valley.

Update at 7:58 p.m. by Bay City News—

Two Alameda County sheriff's deputies were hospitalized after being beaten by three suspects while trying to break up a fight in Castro Valley late Saturday night, a sheriff's sergeant said today.

The deputies responded around 11 p.m. to a routine disturbance call at an apartment in the 2400 block of Grove Way where they found two men involved in a fight, according to sheriff's Sgt. Ray Kelly.

Kelly said the deputies ordered the two men to break up the fight and to get on the ground but the men refused and instead turned their aggression toward the deputies.

One of the men, identified as 21-year-old Keith Carter, punched one of the deputies in the face and knocked him to the ground, the sergeant said.

Kelly said Carter then lunged at the second deputy and put him in a chokehold, nearly choked him unconscious and tried to gouge his eye out.

The second male suspect, identified as Willie Tinoifili, 28, and a woman at the scene identified as 26-year-old Kelly Carter also attacked the deputies, according to the sergeant.

The first deputy was able to get back up and help his partner, using a Taser on Keith Carter to subdue him.

Additional deputies arrived on the scene and all three suspects were taken into custody.

All three were arrested on suspicion of felony assault on a police officer and the two male suspects were arrested for alleged attempted murder on a police officer.

The suspects were taken to Santa Rita Jail in Dublin where they remained in custody as of Sunday evening.

Both deputies were taken to area hospitals to be treated for their injuries.

One of the deputies remained in the hospital this evening to be treated for fractures to the face and will likely require reconstructive surgery, Kelly said.

The second deputy has since been released.

"We're very glad that our deputies weren't injured worse and that they showed tremendous courage and were able to save themselves from further harm," Kelly said.

Sheriff's officials are preparing to present the case to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office.
