East Bay Students “Posterizes” Ride the Recycle Cycle Contest

More than 2,000 students from 32 schools enter the 18th Annual Oro Loma/Waste Management Earth Day Poster Contest

By and Waste Management

Who says recycling isn’t on the mind of our next generation?

From more than 2,000 student entries, 35 winners of the 18th Annual Oro Loma Sanitary District/Waste Management Earth Day poster contest were announced at the Marina Community Center in San Leandro on May 22.

“We were amazed by the student participation,” said Dave Horn, Waste Management of Alameda County Manager of Contract Compliance. “Aside from the sheer number of entries, the students’ understanding of the importance of recycling and sustainability and their artistic expression of these values were impressive.”

Winners in six grade groups from first to twelfth grades were selected based on

  1. How well the poster expressed this year’s theme of “Ride the Recycle Cycle"
  2. Creativity
  3. Artistic expression on an 11” x 17” poster.

Five Recycling Star winners were selected from the Kindergarten entries.

First Place winners from San Lorenzo and San Leandro are as follows:

Grade Student School 1-2 Hailey Lau Chinese Christian 3-4 Kassandra Burciaga 5-6 Winnie Lai 7-8 Stephanie Polanco Washington Manor 9-10 Hao Truong 11-12 Jose Galvan San Lorenzo HS

Students were awarded cash prizes of $700 for First Place, $500 for Second Place, $300 for Third Place, and $150 for Honorable Mention (two). In addition, five $100 Recycling Star Awards were awarded in the Kindergarten grade group.

Thirty-five finalists and their schools received cash and matching cash prizes, respectively. A total of $25,700 was awarded to students and schools in Oro Loma Sanitary District.

Chinese Christian Schools, with $2,350 in prizes, was the top school winner.

Visit www.oroloma.org for a complete list.

All posters winning the Kindergarten Recycling Stars and First, Second, Third Place and Honorable Mention awards will be printed in the Oro Loma 2012-13 calendar.

Another problem: When notified of a reply to a comment I could click the link in the email to go toRead More the article. That was not possible this time. So because a small minority zooms there computer the layout should be as it is? I don't think so. All that white space means that an article that could be read with just one or two clicks to scroll through is now going to take more scrolling to view. One thing that seems to be missing in today's world are web designers who (1) change the layout just because and (2) web designers who have neglected to consider the audience. The more I look at this layout the less I like it. The font needs to be darker than it is. the blue (like in "announcements") needs to be bolder. Overall, on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 best), I rank the new "improved" design a 3.
