Castro Valley Community Park Veterans Memorial Moving Forward

There are plenty of spaces still left for names on the Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine stones for veterans, as well as bricks to be purchased by anyone, including businesses.

There are still those in Castro Valley when asked: “Did you know that local veterans are building a veterans memorial in Castro Valley?”

Even after two-plus years of work on the project — designing and collecting donations — the answer is sometimes: “No I did not!”

So if you to have not heard about , then you have not been to lately.

If you enter the park through the upper parking lot off of Quail Avenue, you will notice a fenced-off area where the sidewalks and curbs have been removed to make way for a handicap parking and a handicap entrance to the new memorial.

So what is the next phase for the memorial?

According to our project manager, grading and leveling of the site itself is to begin over the next several weeks. The memorial’s Army service stone is now completely filled with the names of 99 veterans. The overflow of other Army names will be engraved in the lower half of the Merchant Marine stone.

Likewise, the Navy service stone is almost full and its overflow will be located on the lower half of the Coast Guard stone.

There are plenty of spaces still left for names on the Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine stones for veterans, as well as bricks to be purchased by anyone, including businesses.

The bricks are great way for the public to participate in the Memorial by honoring loved ones who have served their country.
