A bridge to San Lorenzo's beautiful past

The surprise beauty of a 113 year old bridge from San Lorenzo's past.

I grew up in San Lorenzo, crossed Lewelling Blvd. thousands of times and never realized this beautiful railroad bridge ever existed until I saw a picture of it from 1912 in Doris Marciel's book, "Images of San Lorenzo".

When I went to take a look at the bridge I realized it is the same one pictured in the book. The other clue is the big "1900" cut into the top of it. Back then people would take a train over the bridge and stop at Lewelling Blvd. where it was a quick walk to the San Lorenzo Grove.

From a Hayward Historical Society website, When San Lorenzo Grove opened in 1893, the Hayward Journal called it the "Picnic Paradise of California." The Grove featured picnic grounds, ball fields, an outdoor bandstand, and the oak grove for which it was named."

The San Lorenzo Grove is long gone, but the 113 year old bridge, a little rusty and weathered still stands. A bridge to San Lorenzo's beautiful past.

You can purchase Doris Marciel's book, "Images of San Lorenzo" on Amazon.
