Every morning as I drove my kids to school, I'd pass the pond located on Cull Canyon Road and Heyer Avenue. My kids would point out the ducks, the coots, and the white herons that called the pond their home. It was one of the natural landmarks that drew is to call this area of Castro Valley home.
This summer something happened to that pond.
At the end of July and the beginning of August 2013 the waters seemed to recede unnaturally fast. We are all aware that it's been a dry year but this was weird. Each day the water was down at least two or three feet more. It continued until now the pond is a dry wasteland, complete with rotting trout and flies.
This morning I went out to take some photos and I was moved to tears when I saw a duck family huddled together in two-inch deep water looking forlorn. What the heck happened here? Did we get some notice that I know nothing about?
I've been asking other residents and they are all as perplexed as I am. I even called the Castro Valley Forum figuring they would know what's going on but they are like me, trying to find information.
