Stopping the Deportation of Young Undocumented People

There's a lot of unneccessary controversy about President Obama's executive order halting the deportation of (some) undocumented youth.

Two weeks ago, President Obama gave educators something to celebrate when he issued an This is a remarkable step for human rights, especially for an Administration that has deported people at a faster rate than its predecessors.

I’m glad that a weight has been lifted from the shoulders of any undocumented students who will pass through my classroom. Without the threat of arrest, detention and deportation, they’ll be able to better focus on academics and preparing themselves for the responsibilities of adulthood.

As a teacher, I believe in the worth of all of my children. So it’s painful to hear all of the hateful baloney stirred up by Mr. Obama’s executive order. Issue number one: taxes.

The reality is that, in general, undocumented families work hard, pay many taxes (e.g. sales taxes) and do their best to raise their children as productive members of society. Undocumented people are completely ineligible for welfare or Social Security. Even legal permanent residents have to pay into the system for at least ten years before obtaining any eligibility.

I am valued for what I contribute to society as a teacher, not what I contribute to the U.S. government as a tax-payer. Why would we judge a person’s total value as a human being based on what taxes they do or don’t pay?

The whole issue of taxes is a red herring.

Besides, the real tax cheats are perfectly legal. Between the years 2008-2011, Pacific Gas & Electric made $6 billion in profits while paying an effective federal tax rate of negative 18.4 percent. PG&E – the corporation that destroyed an entire neighborhood in San Bruno – is just one of 26 major companies that have paid no net federal income taxes for the past several years. What an outrage.

Mr. Obama’s executive order will simply sweep clear some of the fear and anxiety that exists amongst undocumented people. But let’s be honest. His executive order is also extremely narrow in scope. The requirements, according to CNN:

“Under the new policy, people younger than 30 who came to the United States before the age of 16, pose no criminal or security threat, and were successful students or served in the military can get a two-year deferral from deportation.”

So the truth is that a modest number of people will receive a two-year reprieve from the painful disruption of deportation. How sad that our expectations for progress are so low that this is something that excites those of us who care about human rights?

A better step would be to provide a pathway to permanent citizenship for all undocumented youth. Even better would be to welcome all immigrants with open arms to the wealthiest country in the world.

If that increases government costs, so be it. I know of at least 26 places to find some extra money.

I have my own Dream Act.
I have dream of a country where illegal (NOT undocumented but ILLEGAL) aliens are kicked out of the country, regardless of their age. I have a dream of a country the Constitution is obeyed and not mangled as in the recent Supreme Court ruling that Obamacare is consitutional. I have a dream of a country where a person is free from excessive taxes. I have a dream of a country that allows me to use all of the roads that my taxes paid for (i.e. no HOV lanes). I have a dream of a country that celebrates the fact that we are all Americans without a prefix.

Those opposed are nothing more than closeted Republican bigots who assume (and rightfully so) that once these ethnic minorities become citizens they'll bolster the ranks of Democratic voters further marginalizing their right-wing agendas !!! These imbeciles advocate smaller government but want to control every aspect of our personal behavior by trying to legislate morality. They want to ban abortion, birth control, sex education, gay marriage, gay rights & gays in the military. They oppose women's rights, equal pay for women, immigration, higher taxes & medical marijuana. The only thing they favor is their voter suppression efforts in states nationwide in an effort to disenfranchise Democratic voters who support their opponents. They claim that voter fraud makes this outrageous abuse of their legislative majority necessary, yet have zero evidence that these measures are necessary. The likelihood of voter fraud has been determined to be 0.000005 %,hardly enough to mount an effort to disenfranchise hundreds of thousand of legal voters nationwide. Just a few more reasons why the most intelligent Americans no longer support the Republican Party & the tea-party fanatics who've wrestled control away from the historically more moderate majority.

It's comments like Summers that make many not want to comment on articles on Patch. I'm all for a free expression of honest opinions and logical arguments, but the above comment is nothing more than an illogical rant about some "they" that she has issues with. There are many on both sides that post rants and I am disheartened with I see rants fro both groups. I dream of comments that are well-thought out, calm, and reasonable.

President Obama’s executive order to halt deportations of immigrants brought to the US as children demonstrates leadership.
Permitting these people to obtain permits, legally work and therefore pay income tax benefits both them and our nation. The president correctly called this change “the right thing to do.” No one can show any benefit in deporting some 800,000 people who graduated from American high schools. Since even immigration foes propose no means of doing this, apparently they want these American-raised young people to live as a permanent underclass. As a teacher, I’ve met some of the young people in question and I can tell you they deserve better than that. The same congressional Republicans who accuse President Obama of misusing executive authority have raised obstructionism to unprecedented heights. Only a GOP-led filibuster prevented the DREAM Act from becoming law in 2010. Mitt Romney criticizes the timing but can’t bring himself to say whether he approves of the decision. While his critics bicker and dodge tough questions, the president is leading.

I wonder what you said when Bush tried to make his own laws...

Define "young".
Define "undocumented"
John T. Green July 10, 2012 at 12:20 am
Don, for this executive order the Administration considers young to be "younger than 30" and undocumented is any person living in the United States without government papers.
Paul Vargas July 10, 2012 at 12:42 am
More trampling by Obama on the Constitution. These people should be deported. Plain and simple.
Carlos Jr. July 10, 2012 at 03:08 am
Thank you John T. Green for posting this opinion today. It's a shame the right gets enraged by the President protecting educated youth and not from corporations that are taxing them and not paying their own to our system.
Zolla July 10, 2012 at 10:11 am
It’s far from being enraged over it. It’s a matter of following the law. Undocumented is just another way of saying illegal. They entered into this country illegally by whatever means of deception they could find to enter. They broke the law and for that they should be deported period. Laws and regulations are in place to protect this country and its citizens. Not to bend them just because it doesn’t fit your belief. We elect these people to uphold the Constitution, laws and regulations that are put in place. Obama what’s to change everything that doesn’t follow his agenda. I’d like to know how they got into the school system without the proper documentations, or how there working without em. Sounds to me like they didn’t only brake the law by entering into this country illegally, they also obtained other documentations illegally like Social Security numbers. So basically Obama what’s to harbor criminals from prosecution.
David July 10, 2012 at 10:50 am
It's a shame when the President randomly decides which laws, passed by Congress and signed into law (by the President) to enforce.
As I wrote above, I'm sure you were perfectly fine when Bush "unilaterally" decided to do something. Right? Right?
John T. Green July 10, 2012 at 11:54 am
My moral compass tells me that the highest arbiter of right and wrong is a concept of justice, not written law. To quote Dr. King, "unjust laws were made to be broken." Throughout America's history many laws were found to be Constitutionally-sound (take slavery for example). That doesn't make it right. That said, I'm not sure what aspect of Obama's executive decision was illegal?
David July 10, 2012 at 12:26 pm
I'm sure it's just as legal as if he were to selectively enforce the voting rights act. oh wait, he's already doing that too.
As soon as I can selectively follow the IRS tax code without repercussions, I'll tell you what Obama is doing is legal.
Zolla July 10, 2012 at 12:59 pm
No one is saying what Obama did was illegal. What is being said is these people entered into United States illegally and they should be dealt with by the laws put in place for the crime commented. If you want to change it, then change the laws. Don’t go behide everyone’s back just because you can. I’m sure most of these people came here for a better life for themselves and their families. We are a country of opportunity that they may not have had in their own country. Anyone is welcomed here, just do legally. If the number are correct (800,000) illegal immigrants, our government is missing out on aprox ½ a billion dollars in immigration fees. Here’s something that would probably satisfy both sides. You want to become a US citizen, then go through the process or be deported. Plain and simple.
David Ross July 12, 2012 at 10:54 am
Ms Hemphill, you are showing bigotry in your rant. You automatically lump all people together who do not share your views. You have taken an attitude that I find in many liberals. When liberals are confronted with an opposing view, they resort to name calling and threats. (Witness Brad Pitt's mother)
For your information, Ms Hemphill, I am not a Republican, much less a bigot. I advocate a smaller government. That means I do not wish for the government to control aspect of a person's life. I advocate equality for all. When done on an apple-to-apple basis, there is equality in many areas. In other areas, there is still some work to be done. Let's take one of your rants (there's too many to cover here): equal pay for women. In many occupations, women may be paid less than men. The reason? Women have been working in those occupations for a shorter period. For example, John and Mary both are widget counters. John earns $10 an hour. Mary earns $8 an hour for the same exact job. That's unequal pay for women, right? Wrong! John has been on the job for 10 years while Mary has only done it for 7 years. It's only right that the person with the longer tenure at work be paid more. If Mary had been working for 10 years and John 7 years then the salaries would have been reversed.

What a fine group Republicans have become nowadays ! Anti-labor,anti-tax,fiscal conservatives,Constitutionalists, racists & bigots, the divinely delusional, moral crusaders, the rich & the millionaires & billionaires who bankroll their campaigns ! The Republicans criticize the President whenever he uses his executive authority,bu you didn't hear them doing so when that train wreck George Walker Bush was the one doing it ! At least illegal aliens aren't trying to impose their values on us through legislation & obstructing progress like the clueless politicians & gullible GOP voters mesmerized by FOX News !

Californians can rejoice now that they have their own Dream Act and Trust (sanctuary state) Act. What is it, 2.5 million illegal immigrants in California? Check out our state budget for what it is costing us.
Answer to above - The President has no power to make laws. The Constitution reserves this to Congress. Second, the US is not at fault for not giving amnesty to "younger" illegal immigrants. It is the PARENTS fault for putting these youngsters in the position that they are in. Third, how do you deal with the waiting list of people trying to emmigrate legally. Finally, how does Mexico deal with illegal immigrants who move south to live cheaply. Maybe when Mexico treats southbound immigrants the same way as they want the northbound immigrants to be treated in the US, I'll soften my stance. If you want to learn more about the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, Hillsdale University has a very good free online course (10- 40 minute lectures). www.hillsdale.edu

So you're finally admitting that Obama is just the mirror image of Bush. Glad you're recognizing reality.
Obama busted more pot shops in medicinal marijuana states than Bush did in 8 years. Obama deported more illegal immigrants than Bush did in 8 years. Obama has kept Guantanamo open Obama has expanded his extra-judicial death drones to include American citizens abroad. Obama raised more money from Wall Street. Bush's Justice Department would not have dared to blatantly ignore voter fraud and voter intimidation; Obama's did and does. Obama set up a system of illegal straw buyers to get guns to drug gangs in Mexico, and those guns were used in hundreds, if not thousands of murders of Mexican citizens and our own Border Agent, Brian Terry. etc etc.
Zolla July 12, 2012 at 05:57 pm
"how does Mexico deal with illegal immigrants who move south to live cheaply. Maybe when Mexico treats southbound immigrants the same way as they want the northbound immigrants to be treated in the US, I'll soften my stance"
Well we sure don't climb over the fence, swim across the river or tunnel to the other side then hide like rats till it's dark out to make our move. Nope, we pretty much fly or drive through the border stations. "how do you deal with the waiting list of people trying to emmigrate legally." My guess would be just like you wait in line for anything else, grocery store, bank, movie theater, concerts etc, etc, etc..............

Talking about Presidential candidates, here is the best quotation of the campaign so far. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid suggested Romney would never win Senate confirmation for a Cabinet position. "He not only couldn't be confirmed as a Cabinet secretary, he couldn't be confirmed as a dog catcher, because a dog catcher ... you're at least going to want to look at his income tax returns," Reid said.
Tim July 13, 2012 at 01:43 am
yea, we need more politicians like Harry Reid... this joke of a leader can't even pass a budget as required by the Constitution. Fortunately, as of January 20, 2013, Harry Reid's title will be changed to "Minority Leader".
As for Summer... surprised s/he is still on the Obama bandwagon... after all, it was Obama's DEA on Tuesday that took the initial steps to shut down the one of the largest Bay Area MMJ facilities... that would be Harborside with locations in Oakland and San Jose.... yeah, you go Obama!
Tim July 13, 2012 at 01:46 am
Zolla, I think the House leadership should take the Mexican immigration laws and "rip the cover off" and slap on it a new "cover" on it reading "2012 DREAM ACT" and call it H.R. whatever, and bring it up for an up or down vote to make it our own immigration law.

I believe in having a Dream Act passed. I know many veterans that have served our country couragously, but still cannot live here legally. That is not right. Those that came here as kids, through no alterior motive of their own, deserve the right to be here. If they have not gotten into trouble, are attending college, or have served our country in the Armed Forces, they should be allowed to stay. Reagan thought it was right, and so do most common sense people. An educated, law abiding person is an asset to our country, not an expense. If we have a cohesive immigration policy, those that do not qualify will have no choice but to leave. A good e-Verify would help a good ways. Stop the name calling and get our ducks in a row to make a good policy that is fair and just.
Jaime July 14, 2012 at 11:15 pm
There would be nothing to worry about the new immigrants being Republican or Democrats if we had an adequate educational system that taught the values of Laisse-Faire and the invisible hand and self-reliance as a virture that this country was built on. It is almost unheard of in our schools now. One has to go to college to even hear the very values that inspired our Founding Fathers. If they, and our regular citizens, were taught that instead of a check or an EBT card, this country would have more respect for others, their property and the work ethic. Until we get away from the nanny state, we are destined to the same future as Greece, Portugal, Spain, etc...
Jaime July 14, 2012 at 11:19 pm
We should have the Dream Act, but Obama's Executive Order circumvents the authourity of Congress and makes and end run around the Constitution. No matter how much you disagree with a branch of government, you cannot bypass it because you do not like it's decisions or lack there of.
Paul Vargas July 15, 2012 at 01:57 pm
But think about what an asset they would be to that ignorant, corrupt cess pool known as Mexico?
