Castro Valley Parents Display Car Their Son Died in to Raise Awareness About Drunk Driving

The parents of Scott Leister, a drunk driving victim killed five years ago, will be using the car in which their son was killed in as an awareness and education tool.

Leister’s parents, Carol and Chris, are apart of Mothers Against Drunk Driving. The couple had the organization buy the vehicle from State Farm and have it put in a trailer.

The trailer will be shown throughout the Bay Area to remind people about the dangers of drinking and driving.

Carol Leister hopes to raise awareness against drunk driving “with each mile this trailer travels and each pair of eyes that sees it” — according to an article in The San Francisco Appeal.

Scott Leister was driving east on the Bay Bridge in a Mercedes E420 when he was rear-ended by a Subaru Impreza WRX that was traveling more than 100 mph during the early morning of Aug. 17, 2008.

Leister died at the scene, and three other occupants had minor injuries.

According to California Highway Patrol — Jerell Puno, Fairfield resident and driver of the Subaru, had a blood alcohol level twice the legal limit. Puno sustained minor scrapes from the crash.

He was convicted in 2010 for gross vehicular manslaughter and sentences to 10 years and eight months in a state prison, said Alameda County district attorney spokeswoman Teresa Drenick.
