Castro Valley Adult and Career Education is holding an open house for their newly renamed Strides program for adults with developmental disabilities on November 16.

The open house will celebrate the program’s enhanced curriculum, increased community inclusion opportunities, and greater student choice. The new name, Strides, reflects students making strides toward independence, work readiness, and self-fulfillment.

Castro Valley Adult and Career Education has one of the largest and most comprehensive programs in the East Bay for adults with disabilities. Students come from as far away as Fremont and Livermore to attend classes on the adult school campus. More than 100 students are enrolled in the program, ranging in age from 22 to 70.

Over the last few years, the school re-shaped its Adults with Disabilities program to give participants more choices, a greater focus on independent living skills as well as academics and work readiness, and enhanced learning opportunities. As the program became more aligned with best practices, it was renamed to reflect those changes.

The program's goal is to help each student develop to his or her greatest potential, meet individual goals, and become as independent as possible. The program is unique due to the variety of classes offered and how the school works with students to clarify their goals and help them choose classes aligned with those goals.

Students can choose from over 30 classes. Those classes include life skills and functional academics, such as functional reading, writing, math, and money; computer skills for social and leisure use; American Sign Language and English as a Second Language; meal preparation; and health, hygiene and fitness. Students can also choose various community access classes including using public transportation and social skills. In addition, the program offers workplace skills including volunteer work experience; food service worker; landscaping, gardening, and recycling; and florist, office worker, and custodial work.

The community is invited to the Strides open house on Friday, November 16, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. and from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. Visitors can meet teachers, support staff, and students, as well as tour the school. The address is 4430 Alma Ave. in Castro Valley. For more information, call (510) 886-1000.
